Spring flowering herbaceous perennials

Almost fern like quality

Beeches Nursery, Village Centre, Ashdon, Saffron Walden, Essex (62; vernalis is a favourite with me because it grows on stony, alkaline soils in its native habitat - and that is exactly the rather unfavourable conditions that I can provide for it. Closely related to the buttercup, this adonis has shiny, yellow, many-petalled, open flowers, darker on the reverse, with ruffs of finely dissected green leaves, which appear at the same time. These flowers are up to 8cm (3in) across and are borne on 30cm (12in) stems. Grow this plant in full sun in rock bed or border, leave undisturbed and keep the slugs and snails at bay with ferric phosphate, which is harmless to other wildlife.

  • Leopard's Bane does not have a very good reputation with some gardeners, since Doronicum pardalianches can get a bit out of hand. However, the others are better-behaved and charming with their cheerful, yellow flowers. Doronicum x excelsum 'Harpur Crewe' has branched flower stems, about 60 cm (2ft) tall and, in April and May, these carry flat, daisy-like flowers, golden yellow with darker yellow centres, up to 10cm (4in) in diameter. The basal leaves are bright green and heart-shaped, while the stem leaves are narrower and serrated. This plant may need staking in an exposed spot. Doronicum likes a moist, humus-rich soil and, though fine in full sun, probably grows best in dappled shade.

DALY: Use care when planting around septic drainfields  — Gwinnettdailypost.com
Shallow rooted annual and perennial herbaceous plants can be planted closer to the drain fields since they do not have invasive roots. Turfgrass can be grown over the drain field and is beneficial since it helps hold the soil in place.
